This month, educate yourself about breast cancer

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, and the second most common, so it is important to know the facts. Educating yourself about this devastating disease is the best way to take steps to prevent it. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we would like to highlight some ways to lower your risk.

There are some risk factors we have control over, such as body weight, physical activity and diet. Increased body weight and weight gain are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer. So is alcohol intake. Some studies have shown that moderate to intense physical activity is linked to lowering your risk. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet rich in green, leafy vegetables, fruit, fish and lean protein. Avoid sugar and dairy as much as possible, because cancer cells feed on sugar. Remember, it is never too late to take on a healthy lifestyle!

Studies have also shown that increased vitamin D consumption may link to breast cancer survival, treatment and prevention. Some research illustrates that women with breast cancer tend to have low levels of vitamin D in their bodies, while women with higher levels of vitamin D have demonstrated to be less likely to develop breast cancer. Furthermore, women who already have the disease and have high levels of vitamin D in their body are more likely to survive. For cancer prevention, 400 to 1,100 IU of vitamin D is the daily recommended dose.

The Susan C. Komen website has many valuable resources if you’d like to know more. By becoming more aware of this disease and its risk factors, we can progress into a future with fewer diagnoses and more survivors!

Take care and be well.
