Eating the Right Foods Can Prevent Breast Cancer

Estrogen is a natural hormone essential for female breast and sexual development. Before menopause, estrogen is produced mainly in the ovaries in women. After menopause, they are produced mainly in fat tissue. Higher amounts of estrogen in the blood are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in women after menopause. There are foods you can eat that decreases the levels of estrogen in women to help decrease your risk of breast cancer especially if you have gone through menopause.

Red or orange vegetables and fruits are rich sources of beta-carotene which are effective in reducing the growth of estrogen receptor positive and negative breast tumor cells. These foods include carrots, sweet potatoes, melon, squash or mango. High levels of beta-carotene can result in up to 50% reduction in the risk of breast cancer. You should also have daily consumption of cruciferous veggies, broccoli and cabbage in particular. Foods containg oats and whole grains may block harmful estrogens while also inproving your overall health in general. High fiber foods make you feel full and satisfied for longer. Oats can increase the activity of immune cells known as natural killer T cells and can enhance your body’s ability to eliminate tumor cells. The last food that is good for reducing estrogen is Soybean and related soy products. These are high in phytoestrogens which are plant estrogen and have weak activity in humans. These weaker estrogens bind to the estrogen receptor on breast and ovarian cells and block the stronger human form of estrogen from binding. Overall lowering the levels of estrogen and reducing risk of cancer.

  1. Thank you Susan for your blog on foods for fighting breast cancer. As a breast cancer survivor – it is very important for me to stay healthy. Another breast cancer cause are ingredients other than zinc oxide and titanium oxide in sunscreens. I purchased your sunscreen because of the list of ingredients noted on your site. Had to return it because of the other not-so-good for you sunscreen ingredients.
