Spring has sprung, and the bitter cold weather is behind us. Many of you may have neglected your bodies during the winter months, and with the beginning of spring and summer around the corner, the panic sets in. Don’t panic though! There is plenty of time to implement changes; after all, spring is seen as a time for growth and renewal. Now is the perfect time to make positive lifestyle changes. Throughout this newsletter, I will guide you on how to make healthy smooth transitions, incorporating necessary dietary changes and gentle yet enjoyable exercises into your daily routine. I will also fill you in on all the latest happening here at the Manhattan Beauty Clinic, including the launch of my two newest products! SPRING SKINCARE CHECKLIST ✓
- Take Vitamins
Be sure you are taking Vitamins A, C, E & K. Increasing your intake of antioxidants helps protect the skin from free radicals. Free radicals cause skin damage and overtime contribute to aging by destroying collagen. Less collagen leads to more wrinkles.
- Drink Water
Aim to drink between half an ounce to an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.
- Wash Your Face in the Morning & Evening
You should be washing your face two times a day morning and night. When I perform facials on new clients, time after time I’ve recognized their skin to be dry and flaky. All night long we perspire; this is toxic waste leaving the body, therefore it is crucial we cleanse the face in the morning to refresh the pores and increase circulation.
Exfoliating keeps the skin clear and healthy, and removes dead skin cells on the surface while also tackling oils. Too much oil production can cause the pores to clog up leading to blemishes and acne.
- Use Sunscreen
Wear SPF 30 or higher, be sure you are applying over your moisturizer. A moisturizer with SPF is not enough. I do not put SPF in my moisturizers, as it gives people a false sense of security.
Exercising has a profound effect on the mind, body and spirit. Exercising is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart, and helps to keep the body at a healthy weight. It also helps decrease the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. When you exercise serotonin is released into the blood. When your serotonin levels are too low, both your mood and appetite can be affected. Increased levels of serotonin promote a more positive and happy mood.
Sleep is important for your health and wellbeing. You should be getting eight hours of sleep per night. During sleep we expel toxins from the body through perspiration. Lack of sleep has been shown to impair immune function and is linked to increased inflammation in the body.

Q: What is an important piece of beauty advice that you can give to women?
A: Be gentle with your skin, you should be wearing sunblock 365 days a year! When you know how to apply your makeup, you’ll see you really don’t need much.
Q: What is the key to natural looking makeup to compliment natural beauty?
A: The best way to achieve natural looking beauty is to start with beautiful skin! Your skin is your canvas and when it’s in top shape, it’s easier to get a glowing youthful look. By using all natural skincare and makeup products, you can achieve a fresh look for either day or night. Skincare and makeup completely go hand in hand. Without properly caring for the skin, the makeup will never look as good as it can, and you'll be spending more time on correction than anything else.
Q: What are your spring beauty bag essentials?
A: 1 - A pop of color, lip gloss. It’s time to put away the super dark tones and opt for a pop of color for pout. Berry or peachy colors work well on almost all skin tones, these are very universal. I prefer gloss or matte. 2 - A blush with a little bit of shimmer. Think glow not glitz and think high fashion model not Vegas show girl. I prefer creams over powders to further enhance and promote a youthful look. 3 - Invest in a great exfoliator to refresh and awaken your skin. 4 - A pretty wash of color on your lid, pastel or light earthy tones with a hint of dark liner on the lash line is a fabulous fresh way to "face" the spring. 5 - Finish off your makeup with a setting spray. Not only does it set makeup but it's also a great way to refresh your look after a few hours.

When the seasons change, the makeup must too. That being said, warmer weather calls for lighter shades of color for the lips. It’ time we put away the dark tones and break out the light. Add a dash of color to the lips with one of our beautiful lipshines. The liver is a key player in our body’s digestive system. The pinnacle to anti-aging is digestion. Everything we eat and drink passes through our liver, therefore it is crucial that we treat it right so it can stay healthy and carry out its many functions. There are many foods that help to cleanse the liver; I highly recommend incorporating the following into your diet.

Dandelion Tea Blended with Milk Thistle Tea - Milk thistle and dandelion are herbal supplements that have been used for thousands of years. Both help to treat diseases of the liver, stomach, skin, eyes, breasts and kidneys. You can purchase liquid extracts of each or purchase them together in a variety of blends, available at most health food stores or through an herbal supplement manufacturer. I recommend drinking a cup of this tea up to three times a day, start off with a small dosage and over two weeks slowly increase to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
PREPPING FOR BIKINI SEASON
The days are lighter, the weather is warmer and our spirits are high. Spring is the perfect time to begin preparing for summer. Eating healthy and cutting calories is key to shedding pounds. Filling up on protein and fiber slows down the digestive process and allows you to feel full longer. Fiber is known to reduce constipation and bloating. Below you will find my tips that I suggest following in preparation for swimsuit season.
- Start Moving
Aim to move your body as much as possible. Every piece of physical activity counts!
Cucumber, lemon, green tea, seaweed, ginger and dandelion are all natural diuretics meaning they help to lower blood pressure and rid the body of excess fluids.
Avoid Refined Sugar
Salt, artificial sweeteners, beer and wine, all cause bloating which can last for several days.
Cut the Carbs - Foods including: bagels, pasta, bread, and cookies contain a ton of salt and preservatives and will contribute to water retention and bloating.
Sugar consumption is linked to weight gain and serious diseases including cancer and heart disease.
Stimulate Digestive Enzymes
If you suffer from rosacea, you should be avoiding sugar along with dairy and wheat, each of these is an inflammatory and causes rosacea and other inflammatory conditions.
Over the age of 35, digestive enzymes in the body are reduced; eating dishes with fresh ginger will help to stimulate digestive enzymes in the body, allowing the body to digest food more thoroughly. Ginger is great for anti-aging and the immune system, as well as for maintaining healthy beautiful skin.
Ginger contains anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and helps generate circulation. Ginger stimulates the digestive system by releasing certain enzymes that break down food so nutrients can easily be absorbed.
Use SPF 30 or higher. Unprotected skin is more vulnerable to premature aging and skin cancer.

STEAM THE PORES USING OREGANO OR ROSEMARY
Steaming the pores is a deep cleansing method that can help the skin stay clear. By steaming the pores you are getting rid of any dead skin cells on the surface, and freeing the skin of dirt and bacteria that could be trapped in the skin causing breakouts. Below is a quick and simple procedure for steaming the pores.
Wash. Cleanse the skin thoroughly before steaming your pores.
Steam. Boil a medium-sized pot of filtered water. Add a tablespoon of dry oregano or rosemary and let it steep for five minutes with a lid on the pot. Place a towel over your face and carefully lean over the steaming water, be sure you are at least 6 inches away. Let the steam soak into your face and pores for 10 minutes.
Wash again to get the skin even cleaner. Then apply Pore Minimizing Face Mask all over the face, avoiding eye area. Leave mask on for 20 minutes.
Rinse off mask with warm water, and then use a damp wash cloth to remove the remainder of mask left on the skin.
Apply the appropriate essential oil for your skin, along with Seawater and a moisturizer, to protect the skin from drying out. At night, over your moisturizer, you can spot treat any blemishes with a dab of Pore Minimizing Face Mask. Leave it on all night, and in the morning your blemishes will have shrunk.
*Always cleanse the face with warm water, and finish by rinsing with cool. Make sure to include the nose and cheeks when washing the face and neck.
FROM THE KITCHEN
Beauty Boosting Kale, Avocado Mash
A perfect breakfast alternative, loaded with Omega 3’s, protein, vitamins & minerals
Beauty Boosting Kale, Avocado Mash makes for a great side dish, and perfect breakfast alternative. Loaded with healthy Omega 3’s, protein, vitamins and minerals this delicious concoction cleanses the system of heavy metals and toxins which impede the health of your liver.
1 ripe Haas avocado
5 leaves of Tuscan kale (ribs removed)
1 cup of cilantro (leaves and stems)
1 cup of toasted pumpkin seeds
1 cup of chopped walnuts
2 tbsp. of sesame seeds (optional)
*Make sure all ingredients are organic
Peel the avocado, remove pit
Add to mixing bowl
Add chiffonade of Tuscan kale, whole cilantro, pumpkin seeds and walnuts
Mash together until the avocado is creamy
Place in covered bowl and refrigerate
Refrigerate for a few days before eating. The longer it is refrigerated the more tender it becomes.
